So last Friday, August 6, I turned sixteen years old. Ever since I was fourteen, I've always thought that the age of sixteen is a significant age in life. Maybe because in those cliche teen movies, the main character's age range is from 16 to 18. Then something magical happens, a boy takes this girl to prom, friendships ruined, etc. Maybe that's what happens in western cultures.
On my birthday, I woke up with a thought that just said "Oh hey, I'm sixteen today." Nothing more, nothing less. My day felt like a normal Friday. Went to school, then went to GCF for band practice. The only difference was the amount of pizza and countless greetings online and offline. I guess that day was also tiring because most of the subjects I had on that day had quizzes. I pushed through though.
Until now, I don't feel sixteen. It hasn't kicked in yet. I asked others who've had their birthdays and they felt the same; nothing. I don't know why but maybe this is a sign of growing up? As you get older you realize that you are getting older. Maybe the sixteen didn't kick in because my brother Jake flew off to the US two days before my birthday and my #sepanx hit hard.
I love how my friend Ruthie tried to surprise me but failed. The day before, she gave me instructions that there will be a box in my room and to call her when I get home from GCF. It was obvious that she was going to surprise me. Ruthie, when you are planning to surprise someone, don't give them instructions. What made it funnier was what she put in the letter. "Sana di fail surprise ko hahaha." (I hope my surprise won't be a fail hahaha.)
