Little did I know that it was based on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's (AKA one of the greatest composers of all time) Swan Lake. I didn't know that it was a real ballet classic until only years after. The Swan Lake instantly became my favourite ballet despite not watching any other ones before.
Ballet Philippines held a production of The Swan Lake last March and thanks to one of my balerina friends, Marika, I got to get a ticket and see the classic with my own eyes for the first time. I was completely captivated by the dancers and how how they tell the story of Odette, the white swan, and Odile, the black swan.
One of the moments of the show that I was waiting for were the four swans. I was always fascinated by the way they stayed in sync while holding each other, the familiar tune of the piece made it even better because the choreography fit the playfulness of the song. I'd say the four swans were #SquadGoals.
My favourite part of the ballet will always be the foutte. It's the hardest move in the Swan Lake and up to this day, I still wonder how ballerinas are able to do that.
Maybe ballet just wasn't for me but this paved a way for another genre of dancing which I have grown to love. I appreciate ballerinas and danseurs so much because of the hard work they put into rehearsals and the stunts which they pull off so beautifully and gracefully. They practice for months or even years before they get their first pair of pointe shoes, or before mastering a pirouette and that just adds more to the passion they have for dancing.
